Sir Richard Branson began his entrepreneurial career with Virgin, selling records by mail order. Quickly progressing to a musical empire, the Virgin Group has now expanded into leisure, travel, tourism, mobile, broadband, TV, radio, music festivals, finance and health. Through the Virgin Green Fund, Virgin invests in renewable energy and resource efficiency.
In 2005, Richard established Virgin Unite, the non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group. Virgin Unite’s mission is to help revolutionise the way that governments, businesses and the social sector work together to drive business as a force for good.
In February 2007, Richard announced the Virgin Earth Challenge, a $25 million prize to encourage a viable technology which will result in the net removal of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases.
Richard is a co-founder of Carbon War Room, set up to harness the power of entrepreneurs to implement market-driven solutions to climate change. He is also a co-founder of The Elders, a group of leaders including Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, who contribute their wisdom, independent leadership and integrity to tackle some of the world’s toughest problems.
