Terry Hughes is the Director of the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, headquartered at James Cook University in Townsville. His research mainly focuses on the Great Barrier Reef, the Central and Western Pacific, and the Caribbean. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences in 2001 in recognition of “a career which has significantly advanced the world’s store of scientific knowledge”. He was awarded the Sherman Eureka Prize for Environmental Research in 2007, and the prestigious Darwin Medal of the International Society for Coral Reef Studies in 2008. Terry has published over 125 influential scientific papers so far, based on field studies in many countries around the world, including Australia, French Polynesia, Indonesia, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Samoa. He has been awarded $60 million in competitive research funding. A recurrent theme in his studies is the application of new scientific knowledge towards improving management of reefs.
