Peter Wheeler joined The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as an Executive Vice
President in September 2013. He divides his time between supporting the growing TNC presence in Europe, working closely with the conservation programs in Africa, and playing a key role in the development of NatureVest, TNC’s impact investing unit.
Peter had a long and distinguished career as an investment banker. Until Dec 2010, he was Head of Wholesale Banking, EMEA and Americas for Standard Chartered. Previously, Peter spent fifteen years with Goldman Sachs, initially in New York, then, from 1991, based in Hong Kong, where he established the firm’s Investment Banking business for Asia outside of Japan, He became a partner of the firm in 1994, and returned to the United Kingdom at the end of 1998.
Peter also serves today as a non-executive Director of Rift Valley Company, an African agro-industrial enterprise which owns and operates a diversified portfolio of subsidiary companies across seven operating platforms in three countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Until recently, he was Chairman of IPValue, a California-based company that manages intellectual property
commercialization activity and has served on the supervisory board of Actis, the emerging markets private equity firm, and the board of Climate Change Capital. He is a founding investor in EKO Asset Management Partners, a New York based specialized conservation investment and advisory firm, and an investor in New Forests Company, which operates sustainable forestry concessions in Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Rwanda.
In addition to his business interests, Peter is a co-founder and trustee of New Philanthropy Capital and a Board member of Social Finance. He has served in the recent past on the boards of the Young Foundation, Virgin Unite and Charity Technology Trust. He is a founder of Dasra Social Impact, Mumbai.
Peter lives in London, is married and has four daughters.
