Azad has run a family group for the last 30 years. The group’s activities are mainly based in West Africa and India, and include oil and gas field services, IT software and hardware, aluminium fabrication, and tea growing and manufacture. Azad is Chairman of the Inlaks Foundation, an educational charity that gives scholarships to Indian students to continue their higher studies at leading universities and academic institutions in Europe and the U.S.A.

Azad has been commited to and involved in environmental and sustainability initiatives for the past three decades.  He has been associated with the World Future Council since its inception, is working with Forum for the Future in India, and was the Treasurer of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) from 1985-95, a period in which the IIED was closely involved with the conceptulising and organising of the original Rio Summit.
